WHAT IS ELECTRICITY?
a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current.
CONDUCTORS
- Electrons flow easily between atoms
- 1-3 valence electrons in outer bit
- ex. silver, gold, copper, aluminum
INSULATORS
- Electrons flow is difficult between atoms
- 5-8 valence electrons in outer bit
- ex. mica, glass, wood, quartz
Does all things in this world uses electricity? Site an example. Why it is important?
ReplyDeleteToday life without electricity is almost impossible. Modern life has become so modern and so mechanical that even for all small things in daily life we need electricity. The television, radio, grinder, refrigerator, heater all that we are using at home are running only by electric power. The importance of electricity will show by these various fields; Engineering, Communication, Transportation, Medical, Entertainment and even House Building :)

ReplyDeleteI got confused with your question Sir Mantes, but i think the invention of electrical and electronic components are possible. Yes it's possible but the result of our generation is not as rich as what our generation experiencing today where the electricity was invented.

DeleteRyaniel, It is true that the electricity is so convenient in today's' generation. The reason why it is so hard to remember, we think that it has no value to think about who discovered it because before we were born, Electricity was there, present to everyone. Not all people may ask who discovered electricity maybe because they are not concerned but to those people who want to know who discovered it, they have their free will to search it in the internet. :)
DeleteRomel, Electricity is a form of energy and it occurs in nature, so it was not “invented.” As to who discovered it, many misconceptions abound. Some give credit to Benjamin Franklin for discovering electricity, but his experiments only helped establish the connection between lightning and electricity, nothing more. :)

Romel, have you ever experienced that? Because based on my research, it is true that glass is considered as an insulator. Perhaps the best known material that has excellent insulating properties is glass. Early in the history of the electric power industry, most of the insulators used were made of glass. :)

DeleteTeddy, Actually, This is because solid materials have a large resistance to electrical flow due to their crystalline tight structure. Glass does not allow electrons and electric charge to flow freely. This materials make it hard for electric current to flow.

ReplyDeleteYes Adrian, there is a material that has a capability to conduct and to insulate at the same time. There are other recently discovered materials known as topological insulators that carry properties of both a conductor and an insulator. However, these materials are structured like a sandwich with the surface behaving differently from the bulk. The new study found that in SmB6, the bulk itself can be both conductor and insulator simultaneously. :)

ReplyDeleteWhen we say conductor, the conductivity is very high while semiconductor, the conductivity is moderate. Sir Marco, since human blood contains Hemoglobin that contains iron and blood is mostly water. Both are considered as GOOD CONDUCTOR. So, the human blood FIND as a conductor.

ReplyDeleteMa'am Mylene, The metal with the highest conductivity is silver (Ag). Even though it is the best conductor of electricity, there are two reason silver is not used very frequently over other conductors: 1) it is a precious metal and thus has a high price for the amount of material used and 2) it corrodes or oxidizes easily.

ReplyDeleteSir Alfredo, the scientific explanation of saltwater as conductor is that salt water is a sodium chloride solution with Na+ and Cl- ions. when two separate conductors are immersed in the solution without contacting each other and a bulb or any electrical appliance is placed across the conductors the positive and negative ions migrate and conducts electricity. :)

Elmer, Copper (Cu) is commonly used when oxidation is not an issue, such as home wiring and in most electric motors while Gold (Au) is almost always used if oxidation is an issue. It is very common in electronic connectors and printed circuit boards to use gold plating to get past the corrosion issues. But based on the real life, Copper has a higher conductivity than the Gold :)
